I was watching a fictional(I know it was not real, but the characters were based on the kinds of things real people think, say and do in similar circumstances) TV show about some children who were being abducted. As a group of parents and concerned citizens discussed the events one mentioned how evil the person/thing taking the children was. One of the others quickly piped up with a bold, "I don't believe in evil!" Really!?! I just wanted to hear someone say in a tone dripping with sarcasm, "Yeah, you're probably right, I bet some good people just came by and took the kids for a nice trip to Disney World and they are gonna bring them back in a couple of days with souvenirs for all of us."
There are some bad things that happen because of nature or an accident, or some negligence that was not with evil intent, but how someone could look at children being abducted, terrorist blowing things up, rapes, murders, etc. and not believe in evil is unbelievable. Looking evil in the face and denying its existence is an attitude that is nearly evil in itself.
Evil is very real and each of us has to choose to fight it, embrace it, deny it, or try to ignore it and pretend it will go away. There is only one right choice.
Proverbs 24:11-12 "If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; (12) If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?"
Proverbs 29:7 "The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it."
Evil is not far from us at any time. Maybe that is why so many are trying to deny evil. They don't want to consider the possibility that they have become evil or wicked themselves. - jp
