The book of Proverbs is not one I've read very often. I've read through it several times on my journeys through the Bible, but never chose to read it alone. I would rather choose a narrative such as Ruth, Esther or one of the gospels. It's a shame that I haven't read Proverbs more, really. There's so much good stuff in there! So, when my current Bible study recommended reading a chapter of it AND a chapter of Ecclesiastes everyday, I was not exactly excited. The Bible study is a Bible lesson on having a good marriage. What could Proverbs and Ecclesiastes really have that could help with my marriage? After reading just a chapter or two of Proverbs, however, I quickly saw how much there is in Proverbs that would help with a godly marriage. It was one of those 'duh' moments for me.
The main theme in Proverbs is Wisdom. Wisdom is such a necessary thing in life. We need wisdom in parenting, money and in all our relationships in life. Wisdom is a principle ingredient necessary in combating temptations thrown at us every day. That's what the first chapter of Proverbs tells us. Notice verse 10: "My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent." (Proverbs 1:10) The next three verses record the words of the sinners that entice. This is followed by the warning: don't walk where they walk. Then verse 20 says that Wisdom cries out in the streets and raises her voice in the public squares. Her message gets everywhere! It is hard to miss wisdom crying out everywhere! We need to listen and heed her voice. Let us not be as the fool who despises wisdom and instruction (vs. 7).
